Lucy, Flea and Poetry

I recently took Lucy to visit my Father. When we arrived, we discovered that he'd bought Lucy a new toy, named Flea. Boy, does Lucy love Flea! Lucy mailed Grandfather a thank-you card, complete with this picture and this poem:

Flea

I love Flea!

Flea loves me!

Flea’s the best pal

That ever could be!

I like to play rough

But Flea’s so tough

Flea never says

“That’s Enough!”

Flea doesn’t mind the pool

Flea’s ok with my slobbery drool

Flea tolerates it all

Flea is so cool!

Flea’s body’s fat but that’s not a bother

Since he’s got six legs, he simply flies farther

Yeah, Flea’s great but mostly ‘cause

I got Flea from Grandfather

Lucy H. B

Today, Lucy received this response in an email:

i was up all the night
getting wording just right
to answer, honestly,
your note about flea.
as dark became dawn
and i muffled a yawn
i tried to compose
some elegant prose
and somehow respond
to my favorite blond.
i hope you and flea
share great revelry
you give me much glee;
you're top dog with me!
grandfather h...with help of timmy timmy and porter.

Fun, fun!

About Lucy

Lucy

MUST eat the olives out of our martinis. Every single night. (And, she knows when one is still left in the glass).

Possesses better eyelashes than most women I know.

Is a total bed-hog (and she snores, too).

Will do anything for a hot dog.

Doesn’t like most other dogs but gets along with the other dogs in her family.

Loves children.

Adores all of her grandparents.

Has a terrible habit of jumping on people but also has an amazing ability to realize she can’t jump on people whom she may knock down.

Absolutely could not stand being in a crate; tried to chew her way out of it each time we put her in there (but had no problem with wearing a bucket on her head for six weeks!)

Thinks going to the vet and kennel is great fun.

Likes to play, but won’t share her toys. The only person I ever saw her willingly give her ball to was our nephew Kendal. He was three at the time.

Used to throw up in the car but no longer and is now a fantastic road trip companion.

Can hold her pee and poop for over 12 hours, if need be.

Has a smile wider and whiter than Farrah Fawcett’s.

Never met a stranger.

Sleeps on her back with her legs in the air.

Has a tattoo of a smiley face on her belly (we did NOT do this to her!)

Loves her “slumber parties” with Cailyn.

Never has learned to properly heel but she can sit, shake, lie down, and roll-over with the best of ‘em!

Is afraid of Pete.

Loves Ares.

Tolerates Lily and Athena.

Taught Apollo to sit.

She’s a total Blondie.

Will never stop believing that, one of these days, she just may catch a squirrel.

Hates the swimming pool yet Loves the ocean.

Whines and cries and carries on whenever mom or dad leaves the house.

Every day is a good day (so long as there is food involved).

Will slink out of the room if there are any disagreements going on.

Digs cigar smoke.

She will kiss you, whether you want a kiss or not. She just can’t control her licker!

Is covered with scars from her multiple injuries and surgeries but she’s still the most beautiful dog in the world to us.

Florida!

We just returned from a somewhat unexpected trip to Florida; meaning, we’d hadn’t planned on going but a few things have arisen which prompted us to go. There ARE some changes a-foot in the B household, but, more on that later.

In the meantime, here are a few (a very few; kept forgetting I had the camera) pictures and some commentary about our recent Floridian adventure.

We left Durham mid-afternoon on the 15th with Lucy in the back of the SUV and the five cats remaining home to keep an eye on the place (ha ha, not really; “Uncle” Jon came over daily to see what havoc they’d wrecked on the joint!)

We got stuck in the state fair traffic heading out (and, come to that, we also got trapped in it yesterday on the way back home). Regardless, we were on our way South towards Hardeeville, South Carolina (where we had a room booked at a Red Roof Inn) in good time.

We stopped at a Mexican restaurant that we’d visited three years ago (on our way to Savannah that time) off I-95 at exit 119. Nice place; right off the ramp, next to a gas station, decent food at more than reasonable prices and really tasty margaritas.

We arrived at the Red Roof Inn around 9:30 pm. We’d booked a business King room at a great rate ($49 + tax). All in all, no issues with our stay. As an aside, this is our favorite place to stay when we’re traveling with pets. They NEVER charge extra for pets! And, they now have free in-room Wi-Fi, too.

Lucy at the Red Roof Inn (dad enjoying the free Wi-Fi in
the background!)

We got up relatively early the next morning and drove on to our first Florida stop to Mr. and Mrs. Senior B’s abode in Ocala. As always, we were warmly welcomed and settled in for a pleasant afternoon/evening of good conversation and a nice dinner. Oh, and wine, Scotch, and cigars out on the lanai later!

We left around 11:00 am on Sunday to go on to our 2nd stop in Weeki Wachee (leaving Lucy behind with her grandparents). We spent several days visiting with my Father and step-mom thoroughly enjoying good company, yummy food (courtesy of Chef B), titillating talk, a rousting game of Spades with Father, and just good Q-time. Oh…and this is where the changes I referenced earlier comes in but, again, more on this later!

Cute monkey slippers courtesy of Margot!

We took a side trip to Orlando Tuesday-Wednesday so that we could spend a day at Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival (something we ALWAYS enjoy). Turns out it was the 15th festival, too. Cool.

We’d booked a room in the Holiday Inn at Downtown Disney and were quite pleased with both the room and the location. Because it was in Downtown Disney, we were able to avail ourselves of the free transport that travels to the various parks in Walt Disney World.

Tuesday night we simply walked to Downtown Disney and had dinner at Portabella, one of the many restaurants there. NOT CHEAP! But, the food was fine.

15th International Food and Wine Festival!

Wednesday we spent the entire day at Epcot! We “went around the world” three times (each time takes roughly two hours). We sampled many tasty tid-bits and indulged in an abundance of drink (why not; taking the bus back so we had our built in DD). This time, we also stopped several times while wandering around the world to see a show (in America), listen to a Canadian-Celtic band (Off-Kilter; very fun), relax in a few different quiet areas and sit in a beer garden in Germany where we met/talked to a fun group from Chicago at Disney to celebrate one couple’s daughter’s 21st birthday (I advised her to head over to England to try the Strongbow hard cider!)

Just staring out. My tradition is to have a margarita from
Mexico for my first drink.

Sometime later...I have no idea where we were at this
point :-)

So, yeah; after three times around the world and tons of food and drink, we wandered out to the bus area to catch our transport back to our hotel. This was a bit of a trick; what seemed quite simple at 10:30 am when dropped off was more complicated after sampling the culinary delights of the world!

Anyway, we thoroughly had a blast, as always at the festival. I must say, though, it is NOT cheap to spend just one day at any Disney park. Get this. Admission is now $82 per person! So, we paid somewhat less than $200 in order to walk around and spend another few hundred (on the food and drink). Does this make sense? Well, it’s Disney.

Thursday found us driving back over to Weeki Wachee for a brief visit with Margot, then, on to Ocala to see how our Goose had fared (or, rather, how Grandpa and Grandma had fared; not to mention their poor pets!)

Turns out all was well; Lucy minded her Ps and Qs and didn’t cause much disruption. Ok, she didn’t really cause any. The one thing that made my heart wrench a bit was hearing how Lucy had stayed on the rug by the garage door after we left for almost all of Sunday/Sunday night. Dogs sure are loyal. Thankfully, by Monday, she was well into her newly established Grandma B routine.

We spent Thursday and Friday with the Senior B’s. Out to a Mexican restaurant Friday evening; the food was good (and the margarita I had was awesome) but, there was a Mariachi band playing and it was LOUD LOUD LOUD in there! Seriously, a bit difficult to have much of a conversation. Also, this was the first time I’d ever seen a female Mariachi!

We left for home Saturday morning; had a long but uneventful drive up to Durham, listening to “Innocent” by Scott Turrow on CD (got about ½ way through it). Arrived home safely to all five cats milling around us as we entered (hungry). A Kitty Swarm, as I call it.

Now, back to our version of reality while planning for the future.

Lucy's Photo Shoot

Yesterday was the big day for Lucy; her photo shoot for the Richmond VA 2011 SPCA Dog Calendar!

We met the photographer, Amber Dawn, in Petersburg, VA last evening around 6:30 pm. Amber picked this particular place because a) it was a bit closer for us to get to than Richmond and b) it has a quaint historic downtown area.

First, though, preparation at home!

Lucy, for whatever reason, is going through the big molt-down. Seriously, hair is dropping off her like no one's business. So, we took the shedding blade to her for about 20 minutes. After that, she got a bath (something she really does not like) in order to get the "tarnish" off her neck from her pinch collar plus to remove more hair. After, I brushed her and took off still more hair.

Around 3:30, we got into the car for the 2 hour or so ride up to Petersburg. BO-RING drive. Nothing at all to see; but, at least the drive was uneventful.

We arrived in Petersburg WAY before our scheduled 6:30 appointment. So, we found that place that we were to meet Amber, then, went to fill up on gas, hit a restroom, and find a snack.

We finally located a McDonald's (note: Amber was correct when she told us Petersburg was not a place we'd want to stay at overnight; interesting from a Civil War buff perspective, but, the town itself doesn't appear to have re-cooperated from the Civil War; very depressed). We ended up getting ice cream cones for us and a small hamburger for Lucy.

Lucy ate the hamburger in one gulp. My ice cream was dripping all over me so we decided to give it to Lucy.
Lucy probably thought; "Long ride in the car and a hamburger and ice cream. Life is good!"

Actually, she wasn't entirely sure about the ice cream at first but she finally figured out she was supposed to lick it!
We went back over to old town Petersburg and wandered around a bit waiting for Amber Dawn.
Walking around Petersburg with Dad
Lucy and Mom

When she showed up, she took several pictures of us with Lucy in front of an old house (which used to be the tourist center). Then, time to get the shots of Goosie!

All told, she took pictures in several locations, including rail road tracks, up in a large window sill of a building, more steps, and near a fire hydrant. For each location, Mark would get Lucy in position and take off her leash. I was REALLY nervous about this; I mean, Lucy OFF leash? But, she was beautifully behaved and sat right where she was supposed to. She didn't really care for sitting on the rail road tracks and was a bit uncertain about why she was up in a window sill, but, all in all, she was perfect. Amber Dawn said she was the most obedient dog she'd photographed. Seriously? OUR Lucy? I was so proud of her!

The pictures will be available for viewing in a few days; I'll make sure interested parties have the link.

The calendar itself should be available for purchase towards the end of this week; again, I'll provide details on that.

After finishing up, we got back in the car and drove home. We'd thought about staying in the area for the night but decided it wasn't worth the hassle of finding a motel that took dogs and paying the extra money for the pet fee. Plus, the drive was pretty fast and easy.

So, we were back home by 9:00 pm. A long day, but well worth it!

Lucy's SPCA Calendar Entry

A friend passed along the information that a photographer in Richmond is having a contest via Facebook to select 12 dogs for a 2011 SPCA calendar. The only provision for entry is the dog must have come from an animal shelter.

Since our Goosie is so very photogenic, I decided, "Why not?" These are the pictures I submitted. My guess is the lady will pick one to post on her Facebook site. The deal is, people have to go to her site and vote for their favorite pooch. So, if you are on Facebook, please check out her site and vote for our Lucy (once her picture is up there, of course): http://www.facebook.com/index.php?#!/pages/Richmond-VA/Amber-Dawn-Photography/199772075844?ref=mf&ajaxpipe=1&__a=13

Although she didn't ask for any sort of essay with the pictures, I wrote one, anyway. Couldn't hurt.

Here it is!

I am submitting a few pictures of our shelter dog, Lucy, for your consideration for the SPCA 2011 Shelter Dog Calendar. What a fantastic idea! Regardless of whether or not Lucy is selected, I will look forward to looking at all of the other pictures of everyone else’s special friends.

I’ve always been a cat person (and still am) and before Lucy arrived, had never owned a dog or knew anything about how to live with them. However, a few years ago, my husband and I decided that we wanted to adopt a dog; him from the perspective that he missed having a dog (he’d given up custody of his dogs to his ex wife for his daughter’s benefit) and me because I thought having a dog again would be good for him. In short, in my thinking, the new dog would be “his” dog and I’d tend to my cat.

Of course, it didn’t turn out that way at all! Although my husband DID pick Lucy out (I just could not bring myself to go into the shelter and see all of those dogs who needed homes knowing we could only take one), she has, in essence, become “my” dog.

So, the story goes, we got Lucy from Durham NC’s Animal Protective Services about 3 ½ years ago. After my husband vetted the candidates, I went into a tiny room in the shelter to meet her for the first time. She was extremely enthusiastic and energetic, as befitting her Labrador background (she is obviously predominately Lab with likely some Hound, perhaps Fox Hound, thrown in for good measure). She climbed all over me, bounded about the room to look out the window and came back over to slobber on me for good measure. The handler who’d brought her into the room told us she was very sweet, hardly barked and loved hot dogs. As we were filling out the adoption paperwork, we were told she’d been picked up roaming free a week or so after Thanksgiving; no collar, no microchip and no one ever came to claim her. And, whoever they had been, had her spayed and had a small tattoo of a smiley face put on her belly near her spay. I still wonder to this day who in the world could have given this dog up! But, no matter for Lucy, same came home with us January 2nd 2007. Our vet figured she was roughly 18 months old at the time so that would make her about five today.

Admittedly, the first few months with Lucy were a bit rough for several reasons. One, she was extremely insecure and had separation anxiety, which, given the fact she’d likely been dumped, we could understand. Although she was house trained, there were a few accidents. She bolted out of the house a few times and went for a wild trot through the nearby muddy new house construction sites, with me running behind her (I finally learned you are not supposed to chase a dog as they think you are playing with them!) Plus, at the time, we had an elderly cat that, unfortunately, never did come around to Lucy’s charms. Yes, I’d never had a dog before so I was learning a lot of new things myself.

I took Lucy to several training classes so we’d learn how to walk well together and also to work on the separation anxiety. I’ll never forget that trainer, Jane, telling me one day after I called her for some advice, “Don’t give up on her. I promise you, in six months, she’ll be a completely different dog”.

Don’t give up on her. That just stuck in my head and, over the course of the years whenever we’ve had a behavior issue with Lucy, that mantra jumped back in to my head. Don’t give up on her.

Lucy and I also went to a general obedience class (much of this was training me just as much, if not more than Lucy!) and, over the course of the years, she’s had a few other training sessions as needs have arisen. Although it is pretty apparent that there are a few things Lucy does not like (other dogs if on leash, being in a crate or confined to a small room which includes the brand new dog house I bought her) which we attribute to “whatever happened to her “BU” (before us), she is otherwise a loving and perfectly delightful dog (even though she’s also stubborn and sometimes a bit “blonde”!)

I take her with me everywhere I go, weather permitting. In the spring, we drive down to Florida together for three weeks to visit and stay with various relatives. Lucy is always welcomed, and, her visits are even anticipated by my Father, who, before Lucy, pretty much wanted absolutely nothing to do with dogs.

She is perfectly delightful with our small nieces and nephews; some of the first words my nephew said (that I could understand, anyway) was “Lucy” and Lucy’s house”. She also does well with our five cats (the one that couldn’t stand her has since gone to The Rainbow Bridge) and will even cuddle with a few of them (if they let her). Sometimes, I think Lucy thinks she’s a cat.

Lucy has had a few significant heath issues. A year after we got her, we discovered she had the beginnings of Heartworm. Luckily, the treatment worked (although fairly ghastly; arsenic injections, who would have thought it?) and we all survived the six to eight weeks in which we had to keep her quiet. Imagine that!

This past April, she developed a very quickly growing Mast Cell Tumor on her left hind leg. The tumor plus large margins were removed. Thankfully, the margins came back clean and we’re keeping our fingers, toes, and eyes crossed that the cancer did not metastasize. Our vet is very confident he got it all, but, obviously, you never know.

Her recovery from this was rough on everyone, but, in particular, her. The poor thing had to wear a bucket (e-collar) on her head for about six weeks. There was a hideous open wound on her leg which must have hurt like heck. She had drains, stitches, rubber tubing, stables in her leg and was on something like 15 pills a day. She’s come through it, though; and I can happily report that she is back to running around and playing, chasing her ball, catching frogs in the backyard, and joyfully jumping around when people she loves come to see her (notably my step daughter and her “Grammy”).

A friend of mine sent me the information regarding your calendar. I thought, given everything we’ve recently been through with Lucy, it was perfect timing. I am sending a few pictures for your consideration. My favorites are her “soulful ones” but I did also want to send one that showed her incredibly infectious smile.

In closing, I have to add this. Not too long after we got Lucy, I purchased a few tee shirts with slogans about shelter dogs emblazoned on the fronts. My favorite reads:

“Who rescued whom? Proud owner of a shelter dog”.

This sums up my relationship with and feelings for my , Lucy. I didn’t, and won’t give up on her. Ever.

Thank you for your consideration!

Guess Who Is Home!

After four surgeries and basically six weeks at the vet (give or take a few days), Lucy FINALLY come home this afternoon with no restrictions. The bucket is off her head, too. So, other than a few more days of taking antibiotics and making sure she doesn't start chewing on her leg (licking is ok), we're good to go!
I took her for a long walk and then she ran around the kitchen with her duck. I tried to get a picture of us but I couldn't get her to hold still; most of the pictures only showed her tongue.
I finally got one that's half decent; at least her tongue isn't in my face!
Here is hoping she doesn't have to go back to the vet for anything other than routine check ups and boarding visits for many, many, years to come.
Welcome home, Goosie!

Welcome Home, Goosie

After spending an unexpected but for the best week + stay at the vet, Lucy came home this afternoon. She looks so much better! Although the wound is still scary to look at, it IS sealing/scabbing over. Yeah, she still has a ton of meds to take twice a day and now we get to put some goop on her wound as well, but, hey, at least she's back AND we don't have to keep her quite so calm and contained.
The moment we got home, we went for a long walk. I took off her cone so she could enjoy the air and sunshine. She was really, really happy to be out walking. I took this picture when we came back inside before I put the cone back on. She's not quite back to her usual goof-ball smiling self, but, she's getting there!

Hannibal Lecter Lucy

We got this muzzle after Lucy attacked one of our smaller cats last week. We are hoping we don't have to use it often (she was resigned enough about it). Certainly, she can't get at anything more than water and a few small pieces of food (no kitty parts). It's a safeguard, is all.
The good news is, she's been an angel since the incident. Really, quite good. I've been reading a lot about canine aggression (an extensive article courtesy of our vet) and I really do not think she has a serious problem. Hopefully, this means that we might be able to keep her after all.
Don't worry all you Lucy fans; the muzzle was on her for about 10 minutes and that is it. Long enough for me to ascertain that a) she'd allow us to put it on her b) she wouldn't completely freak and c) she can drink/breath easily.
Oh, and of course I had to take some pictures. She really did look quite pathetic!

Happy Birthday Lucy!!!!!

We got Lucy three years ago today. Since we don't know, of course, when she was REALLY born, we decided to celebrate her birthday on January 2nd.
Our vet, Uncle Chuck, thinks she was 1 1/2 when we got here; which would place her at approximately 4 1/2. Maybe she was a 4th of July puppy?
Anyway, here is a picture of her cuddling with her birthday present; a big, plush, pink pig!

Life Around Here At Pet Central

Oh SNAP yesterday was SO irritating!

But, rather than bitch and complain, instead I'll post a few pictures of life around here these past few days at pet central!

And a video of dinner time! Apollo is the squeaker, Ares has the low meow. All are present save Hera, who is usually fashionably late to dinner.

Lucy-ism

Because Lucy doesn't do well with food around our other pets (just ask Lily), we started (at my brother's suggestion) to try to feed her outside. If it's raining, we feed her in the sunroom. If one of the cats (or now kittens) are in the sunroom, we put her in the 1/2 bathroom off the kitchen and shut the door.

Most of you know, too, that Lucy is fairly well trained in that she will sit down next to her bowl and wait for the okay command to start eating.
So, the drill is, after I shut the door, I go sit down at the table. When I no longer hear her gobbling away, I let her out.
Here is the Lucy-ism.
Not too long ago, we went through this drill. I got her bowl of food, put it on the floor in the bathroom, she came in, I made her sit, etc.
I went out and sat at the table and got distracted by an email or something. Probably ten minutes later, I realized it was quiet in there so she must be done.
I opened the door (and flipped on the light as I'd obviously unconsciously switched it off) and there was Lucy sitting next to her bowl with a pathetic look on her face.
Her bowl was still full of food. It was then I'd realized I'd forgotten to give her the "okay" command.
So, she was just sitting there (in the dark) not eating her breakfast because she'd not been told it was okay!
Silly Goose!

Charleston Tomorrow!

Finally! We are leaving tomorrow (our 4th anniversary) to head down to one of our favorite places for four nights; Charleston SC. It's a special place because a) it's where we went on our first vacation together back in 2004 and b) it's where we were married in 2005 (well, technically we were married on Folly Beach NEAR Charleston).
Our wedding day on Folly Beach, Charleston May 16 2005

Anyway, we are staying at the same place we stayed at the other two times, Vendue Inn. And, we'll be eating tomorrow night at Slightly North of Broad (SNOB), which is where we ate on both our first night in Charleson in 2004 and on our wedding night a little over a year later.
Our first time at SNOB together April 2004

I'm sure we'll also eat at a few different places that we've not been to (one of my Facebook friends asked me to take a picture of us having a drink at the bar at Charleston Place) and I want to go to Fort Sumter. We'll probably visit Folly Beach as well, but, that's about all we've got planned; we usually don't go overboard in the planning department.
We were originally going to drop Lucy off at the kennel (Triangle Vet) tomorrow morning but I got to thinking that would be a lot of driving around (in the opposite direction of where we want to end up), especially since we want to leave by 10:00 am or so. I called a few weeks ago and they said they could accommodate her one night early.
I drove her (and her Santa) over there around 1:15 this afternoon. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, she started hopping around in the back of the car. She gets SO excited whenever we take her there (which goes a long way, I can tell you, in abating any guilt I may feel for leaving her there).
This time, I asked to see where she'll be hanging out. So, they took me on a tour (she'd already left me).
When we can (which is almost all the time), we pay extra to have her in a run. In essence, it's like a cage but it's quite a big bigger, both width-wise and length-wise. They are several of them out there all next to one another. So, the dogs can visit but they are separated. If it's cold, they bring them all in at night (it's definitely not cold).
Anyway, there were a lot of dogs out there! All very excited and happy and barking away. Lucy didn't see me looking at her because they were busy getting her situated but I could see her; running happily about, tail wagging, big smile on her face, barking her head off.
The Kid made a comment to her dad the other night that Lucy is probably happier there because she doesn't "get yelled at all the time". In all honesty, that's probably true, to some degree. She probably doesn't get yelled at, period; and, she gets to bark, pull on the leash, jump up on people; you know, all the stuff she is not allowed to do at home.
I left and went on my way, feeling good that our girl's gonna have her own little vacation, too.
As for Pete and Lily, Uncle Jon and Aunt Shannon will be stopping by daily to see how they're doing.
All bases covered; we're ready to roll!
